Abstract:

Regional transportation is considered one of the fundamental components of transport geography, as it plays an important role in organizing spatial relationships among cities, settlements, and regions, facilitating the movement of people, goods, and services, and strengthening interconnections among various activities and functions. This research aims to clarify the concept of regional transportation and explain its relationship with transport geography, as well as to analyze the spatial relationship between transportation networks and natural and human factors, and to demonstrate their impact on spatial organization and regional development. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by examining relevant geographical literature and analyzing the spatial relationships between transportation, population, settlements, services, and economic activities. The research concludes that regional transportation is not merely a means of movement and communication; rather, it plays an active role in shaping the geographical space and directing the distribution of population, activities, and land uses. It also demonstrates that the efficiency of transportation networks is associated with site characteristics, topography, climate, and the spatial distribution of population and economic activities. Meanwhile, the development of transportation networks contributes to enhancing accessibility and spatial interaction, supporting regional development, and achieving greater integration among urban centers, rural areas, and neighboring regions.
